Smart Beta: The Investing Buzzword That Won't- and Needn't- Die – Panel Discussion

Moderated by: Pat Bolland, Media Consultant

Tom Goodwin, Senior Director of Research, FTSE Russell

Stephen Hoffman, Vice President, Exchange Traded Funds, RBC Global Asset Management Inc.

Jamie Wise, Founder, BUZZ Indexes and President, CEO, Periscope Capital

Ditching "smart beta" would make sense if it were seriously confusing people. But investors recognize "smart" as a marketing term like many others: Growth funds don't always grow, and value stocks aren't always a good value. Advisors and investors are finally getting their heads around the concept of smart beta. Substituting a bunch of new terms would just be confusing. At this point the genie is out of the bottle and we will spend our energy educating advisors and investors on what smart beta is all about. It's easy to see why many have tried to kill off "smart beta." Many of the other terms are no doubt more technically accurate. They just don’t have the zing of smart beta.

Smart Alpha

Mark Yamada, President & CEO, PUR Investing

Unlike smart beta, smart alpha is forward-looking and dynamic. Smart beta strategies establish fixed rules-based security selection or weights based on historical data, and rebalance at a preset frequency with an expectation that factors will continue to earn excess returns over the holding period. Smart alpha uses expected returns and/or risks in the context of changing market conditions to adjust strategies or securities based on a continuous information loop. Smart beta is static by design. Smart alpha is dynamic by its nature.
Mark Yamada will discuss how advisors can use smart alpha to improve goals-based investing and how it could change the future of money management.
